Overview

Born 1974, Tel Aviv, Israel. Lives and works in London, England.

Karen Russo’s multidisciplinary practice draws from a wide array of sources, including architecture, science fiction, psychology, and criminology. She is particularly fascinated by historical moments in which ancient myths and symbols intersect with political ideologies, shaping narratives that often have profound and sometimes catastrophic consequences. Her work explores the failures of personal, artistic, and national utopias, and examines the porous boundaries between history and fantasy.

Russo has exhibited widely at major international institutions, including the Barbican, Hayward Gallery Project Space, V&A Museum, Tate Modern, 176, Delfina, and Paradise Row in London; the Busan Biennale in South Korea; Montevideo in Amsterdam; Grosse Kunstschau and Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in Germany; Arquebuse in Geneva; and in Israel at the Israel Museum, the Center for Contemporary Art, and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Her works are held in the permanent collections of the Israel Museum (Jerusalem) and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
