Miri Segal born 1965, Haifa, Israel. Lives and works in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Segal’s work seems to be underlain by the constant principle of cyclicality, of movement between the existing and that which is exposed, between the reality of the world and what the artist reconstructs. It embeds something of a mirage: disorientation, loss of reference points and their reconstruction, giving form to the invisible according to a protocol at once self-evident and playful, a protocol whereby the viewer is led to choose: either the inverted image facing him or the right image at his feet. Segal confronts us with this intermediate space, with the alternative. One must also linger on her language and the meaning of her words. Ultimately, Miri Segal’s project is based on the hidden and fixed idea that every thing, every situation, every condition inherently contain its opposite and antithesis. It is the viewer’s duty to comprehend and decide where he stands, to determine where and how he situates himself: art is undoubtedly always a question of point-of-view.
Segal had numerous solo exhibitions. Among others, she exhibited in the Barbican Centre (London), MoMA PS1 (New York City), Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art, Haifa Museum of Art, Circle 1 – Platform for Art & Culture (Berlin). The artist was part of various group exhibitions, including in Musée national d’Art Moderne — Centre Georges Pompidou, Total Museum of Contemporary Art (Seoul), Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel Museum, Kunsthalle Wien (Vienna), Museum of Art Lucerne (Luzern), Petach Tikva Museum of Art. She was awarded the Mendel and Eva Pundik Prize, Tel Aviv Museum of Art (2009) and the Centre International d’accueil et d’échanges des Récollets, Paris, Artist in residence, award of the city of Paris and the ministry of foreign affairs in 2005.
