Thomas Hirschhorn at MoMA PS1
Hirschhorn’s work “CNN” from 2002 is shown in the group exhibition ‘Theater of Operations. The Golf Wars 1991 – 2011’ at MoMA PS1. American-led military engagement in Iraq over the last 30 years has had an indelible impact on contemporary culture and the work of artists around the world. This large-scale group exhibition examines the legacies of these conflicts beginning with the Gulf War in 1991, featuring over 300 works by more than 80 artists based in Iraq and its diasporas, as well as those responding to the war from the West. As you walk into Moma PS1 in Queens, New York, visitors are greeted with an unlikely wall sculpture – the CNN logo at the end of an oversized gold chain. The artwork criticizes the pivotal role that CNN played in accelerating the 24-hour news coverage of the Gulf war, setting the pace for war news.
