In Torah Scroll, Eliyahu Fatal explores themes of enclosure, access, and the symbolic weight of sacred texts. Unlike earlier works focused on openness, this piece presents two closed gates, contrasting the familiar motif of accessibility with restriction. It invites viewers to question the boundaries of knowledge, belief, and heritage.
The image originates from Fatal’s studio, where bars typically roll up to signal openness. In this case, the bars are rolled down, enclosing the Torah rather than allowing access. This act transforms the bars into both a physical and metaphorical barrier, shielding and revealing the sacred text. A prismatic pattern of colors within the bars heightens this tension, adding a multi-layered dimension to the sense of concealment.

Exhibited at the Museum of Bat Yam in 2020 as part of Since Then, Measurements Have Begun, the work examines the relationship between container and content, questioning how limitations shape meaning. The use of the prism of colors within the bars alludes to the complexity of interpretation, suggesting multiple perspectives hidden within restrictive frameworks. Scrolling, both literal and metaphorical, reinforces themes of cyclicality, concealment, and restricted knowledge.
