Overview

Adamon Galor Mekonen was born in 1985 in Ayoye, Ethiopia. At the age of six, she immigrated to Israel, initially residing in a immigration center in Acre before establishing a permanent home in Binyamina. Galor studied in Bezalel Academy of Arts in the Department of Ceramics and Glass Design. She currently lives and works in Mevo Modi'in.

Galor’s ceramic sculptures are crafted using a variety of traditional pottery techniques from around the world. After exploring numerous methods and materials, she ultimately returns to her roots, a process evident in each piece. She begins by shaping the base on a pottery wheel, drawing inspiration from Japanese techniques and meticulously refining it before adding abstract details in a meditative manner. The sculptures are then painted black and fired, marking their final transformation. This black color echoes traditional Ethiopian firing methods, such as pit firing and smoking, which create distinctive black ash patterns on the clay.

Her work embodies polarity and complexity, addressing contrasts such as wholeness and fragmentation, connection and alienation, and the balance between being secured and undone. These themes resonate throughout her life, forming the essence of her art and evoking in viewers a sense of curiosity and ambivalence, as well as feelings of both estrangement and familiarity.
