Overview

Born 1985, Ayoye, Ethiopia. Lives and works in Mevo Modi’in, Israel.

Adamon Galor Mekonen immigrated to Israel at the age of six, settling first in an absorption center in Acre before establishing a permanent home in Binyamina. She studied in the Department of Ceramics and Glass Design at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem.

Galor Mekonen’s ceramic sculptures are rooted in a deep engagement with traditional pottery techniques from around the world. After years of experimentation with diverse materials and methods, she returns to her cultural and personal origins—a process that infuses each work with layered meaning. Beginning on the potter’s wheel and often drawing from Japanese traditions, she meticulously refines her forms before adding abstract details in a meditative rhythm. The pieces are then coated in black slip and fired, evoking the distinctive patinas of Ethiopian firing practices such as pit firing and smoking, which produce unique ash patterns on the clay.

Her works embody a sense of polarity and complexity, navigating the tensions between wholeness and fragmentation, connection and alienation, security and vulnerability. These contrasts mirror the artist’s own life experience and are central to her visual language, inviting viewers into a space of contemplation marked by both estrangement and familiarity.
