The title refers to the 33 degrees of Masonic initiation in the Scottish Rite (the 33rd being the highest degree conferred on a Freemason). An entire wall is painstakingly covered by hand with a dense layer of graphite, leaving blank 33 unique text works. On the floor, Douglas Gordon chose to leave the pencil-sharpener shavings as remnants of the work process. The sentences all revolve around being drive to or guided by someone between the poles of light and darkness. Gordon’s text-based practice - inspired, among others, by Art & Language, a group of conceptual artists active in the 1960s - generates a direct dialogue between the artist and the viewer. At the heart of this reflection are questions of perception, repetition and meaning.
