Amphibia: Aysha E Arar
Amphibia is the ability to live and operate in water and on land, an ability which characterizes the Amphibians, mythological creatures, and weapons. Aysha E Arar translates the duality of the biological term into a duality of imagination and reality; The water world is a space of imagination, freedom, movement, and creativity that stands in contradiction to the limitations and prohibitions of in the life on land. This duality exposes her struggle with the inherent conflict between tradition and progress, between collective identity and a personal one, between the function in the domestic sphere and self-fulfillment, which is common to women in traditional Muslim society.

In this video animation, AI generated, one figure stands out – a mermaid wearing a hijab, contemporary and mythological at once. The traditional head cover as a tool of oppression and control, the symbol of the feminist struggle of Muslim women, apparent in both worlds – the day to day, as well as the dream-like. She is both Andersen’s ‘Little Mermaid’, who sold her voice for a pair of legs, it is both the female voice which is used as a deadly weapon in the song of the siren; a symbol of dealing with the religious ban of women’s singing in contrast to the passion to create relentlessly. The artist is exhibiting her day-to-day as an allegory and asks to add it to a visual-database that is cross boundaries, times and religions.
Irit Carmon Popper

Aysha E Arar (1993) uses painting, language, video and poetry and turns spaces into arenas where she expresses herself. She paints on paper, on canvas and on the wall, moving from narrative to abstract painting, and combines imaginary creatures based on Palestinian legends in contrasting colors such as red versus blue and yellow ver-sus black. Arar covers her personal biography as a woman in a patriarchal society and touches on questions of tradition, freedom of choice and liberation.“I don’t know how to draw realistic paintings, I draw from the world of imagination and fantasy. This allows me to merge imagination with reality and all the contradictions that I live in content”.
