The word pomegranate perhaps comes from early French for the fruit pomme grenade. The pomegranate was known in early English as apple from Grenada. The duality of this fruit is already mentioned in its name: Mediterranean symbol on one side, symbol for fertility and prosperity in many cultures, and the violence induced by the potential explosion on the other side. Is it one of the seven metaphoric species of Israel and appears in the Coran and the Bible with a strong vital symbolism. The work is a “classical” still life but it is open, wounded, and the red grains have become black.
