The upcoming solo exhibition Aftermath by Nelly Agassi, running from May 4 to June 8, 2025 at Kim? Contemporary Art Centre in Riga, explores the fluid and evolving nature of history, memory, and transformation. Hosted in the Baltic region for the first time and curated by Tīna Pētrsone, the exhibition presents Agassi’s unique approach to site-specific narratives, weaving personal and collective histories into immersive installations.
The concept of Aftermath is rooted in both destruction and renewal, a duality that resonates deeply in today’s unstable socio-political climate. Historically, the term referred to the regrowth of grass after harvesting, an image that suggests resilience and cyclical return. In this context, Agassi examines how history—rather than being a fixed entity—is constantly reshaped by reinterpretation, ideology, and the passage of time.
During her residency in Riga, Agassi engaged with the city’s layered history, visiting museums and absorbing its architectural and cultural landscapes. The result is a series of works that incorporate fragments of these encounters, reimagining past narratives through materiality and gesture. Her installations act as meditations on time, memory, and the persistent presence of history in contemporary discourse.
