Haim Steinbach at MACS, Boussu, Belgium

on view from 18 May 2025 until 2 November 2025

Objects for People is Haim Steinbach’s first solo exhibition in a Belgian museum, bringing together a selection of works spanning over forty years of practice. Renowned for his wall-mounted laminate shelves introduced in the 1980s, Steinbach redefines the art object through the careful selection, arrangement, and presentation of everyday items.

By relocating familiar objects from domestic settings into the museum, his installations highlight the cultural, emotional, and symbolic dimensions of seemingly ordinary things. The horizontal display structures—shelves, scaffolding, vitrines—act as equalizing platforms, subverting traditional hierarchies of display and encouraging a new kind of attention.

The exhibition also includes two significant projects developed in collaboration with Belgian collectors: An Offering: Collectibles of Jan Hoet (1992) and An Offering: Collectibles of Herman Daled (2000), both emblematic of Steinbach’s deep engagement with memory, collection, and context.
