    Naama Tsabar

Naama Tsabar born 1982, Israel. Lives and works in New York, USA.
Tsabar’s practice fuses elements from sculpture, music, performance and architecture. Collaborating with local communities of female identifying and gender non-conforming performers, Tsabar writes a new feminist and queer history of mastery. Her interactive works expose hidden spaces and systems, reconceive gendered narratives, and shift the passive viewing experience to one of active participation. The artist draws attention to the muted and unseen by propagating sound through space and sculptural form. Resting someplace between sculpture and instrument, form and sound, Tsabar’s work lingers on the intimate, sensual and corporeal potentials within these transitional states.

Naama Tsabar's Smashed Guitar Sculptures Invite Intimate Encounters

    April 10, 2024
Now and then, Naama Tsabar breaks an electric guitar at her studio. With safety goggles on and blasting 1990s rock (ideally PJ Harvey), she tears a store-bought instrument into shreds....
  • The exhibition focuses on three bodies of work with wall and floor works that also function as musical instruments and can be activated by the audience. The performance, created especially in the exhibition, is developed in close collaboration with a group of female identifying or gender non-confirming musicians and performers from Berlin and New York. With the use of felt in connection with sound, Naama Tsabar corresponds with works by Joseph Beuys, which are also shown in parallel in the Kleihueshalle. The exhibition is the first in a series of contemporary presentations in dialogue with the presentation of Beuys’ works in the collection.
