Overview

Born 1972, Jerusalem, Israel. Lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

Omer Fast is an artist and filmmaker whose work examines the psychological structures of trauma and the complex interplay between memory, storytelling, and representation. Frequently grounded in historical or contemporary events, his films construct layered narratives that blur the boundaries between reality and fiction. Fast is particularly interested in how stories shift as they are retold—how multiple voices and perspectives transform (hi)stories into new interpretations.

Recurring themes in his films include families coping with loss, the absurd mechanisms of psychological survival, and the instability of truth in mediated experience. In more recent works, such as The Invisible Hand and Karla, Fast incorporates virtual reality and digital technologies to expand the immersive and participatory dimensions of his practice. His films are often presented within meticulously designed installations—cinematic or theatrical environments that implicate the viewer as an active participant.

Fast has presented numerous solo exhibitions, including at the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung (Munich), Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul), Guangdong Times Museum (Guangzhou), Jeu de Paume (Paris), and Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (Montreal). He has participated in group exhibitions at institutions such as MAXXI (Rome), Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden (Baden-Baden), the Israel Museum (Jerusalem), and mumok (Vienna).

His many accolades include the Nationalgalerie Prize for Young Art (Berlin) and the Bucksbaum Award from the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York). Fast’s works are held in major public collections, including the Musée national d’Art Moderne – Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York), Tate Modern (London), Hamburger Bahnhof (Berlin), and mumok (Vienna).
