Overview
Born 1982, Tel Aviv. Lives and works in Tel Aviv and Paris.
Matan Mittwoch’s practice examines the technological tools that have become inseparable from contemporary life, probing the forms of control and perception they generate. In an era when everything is “smart,” Mittwoch dissects these devices to understand their impact on our bodies, emotions, attention, and relationships. In his works, the mechanical eye competes with the human gaze, transforming familiar tools of technology into perceptual experiments. The resulting images and objects often echo the visual language of modern abstraction, revealing the aesthetic and conceptual possibilities embedded in the mechanisms that mediate our daily lives.
Mittwoch has held numerous solo exhibitions, including at MOMENTA Biennale de l’image (Montreal), Centre d’art de l’Onde (Vélizy-Villacoublay), Wizo Academy of Design and Education (Haifa), Dvir Gallery (Brussels and Tel Aviv), and Untilthen Gallery (Paris).
He has participated in group exhibitions at institutions such as West Den Haag; FRAC Normandie (Rouen); Helena Rubinstein Pavilion for Contemporary Art (Tel Aviv); Cneai Art Center (Pantin, France); Grundemark Nilsson Gallery (Berlin); The Kupferman Collection House Gallery (Lohamei Ha’ghetaot); Petach Tikva Museum of Art; Tel Hai Photography Museum; and the Genia Schreiber University Art Gallery (Tel Aviv).
Mittwoch is the recipient of the Gérard Lévy Prize of The Israel Museum (2014–2015), the T.A. Scholarship of Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design (2013), and the Igal Ahouvi Art Collection Promising Artist Award (2012). His works are held in the permanent collections of FRAC Normandie (Rouen) and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. In 2024, Mittwoch was selected for the Discovery Award, Louis Roederer Foundation, at Les Rencontres de la Photographie, Arles.
