'Stolpersteine' is an installation made in reference to Gunter Demnig’s ongoing memorial art project in 610 cities across Europe. 'Stolpersteine' (‘stumbling blocks’) are small commemorative brass plaques inserted in sidewalks in front of the former residencies of Nazism’s victims. By recreating single sets of new Stolpersteine from concrete and brass, as free elements and without an engraving, Ariel disconnects the objects from their historical function (seen in the work of Gunter Demnig). This action creates a realm of possibility in which every name could be inscribed and functions as a possible warning to the future. The work is also deeply connected to the history of art, specifically Carl Andre’s cubes shifting between the two worlds. In the series 'Stolpersteine (vandalized)', Schlesinger takes the piece one step further, referring to current vandalism of the original Stolpersteine and to the idea of continuation of a legacy through destruction.
