Working in film, photography, and the increasingly rare method of intaglio printing (incising and copper-plate printing), Jennifer Bornstein creates representations of ordinary people engaged in the quotidian. Bornstein’s works often layer varying mediums and periods of artmaking—typically representing both slow processes with more fast-paced processes—such as her etchings based on photographs of figures posed in the same manner as the subjects of 19th-century archival photographs. For her 2010 work How Many Billboards?, the artist engaged in a similarly tongue-in-cheek manner, taking a painstakingly detailed etching and copying and enlarging it at very large scale, only to display the resulting work as a billboard on LA’s Sunset Boulevard.

Jennifer Borstein had numerous solo exhibitions. Among others, she exhibited in the The Silvie Fleming Collection (London), Radcliffe Institute – Harvard (Cambridge), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Färgfabriken Center for Contemporary Art (Stockholm). She was part of various group exhibitions, including in Mumok (Vienna), MCA (Chicago), Pratt Institute Manhattan Gallery (New York City), Whitney Museum of American Art (New York City), Hammer Museum (Los Angeles), CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art (San Francisco), Musée des Beaux-Arts (Nantes). During her career, Bornstein won numerous awards and prizes, e.g. she was awarded the DAAD Künstlerprogramm Fellowship and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award, among others. Her works are featured in many prestigious collections such as Musée national d’Art Moderne — Centre Georges Pompidou, Stedelijk Museum, New School University (New York City), Hammer Museum (Los Angeles), MOCA Los Angeles.
