Chen Cohen (b. 1983), is an interdisciplinary artist working in photography, video, installation and performance living and working in Tel Aviv.
Cohen’s practice hovers around rights of healing. She invents rituals, creates situations, hijacks existing frameworks to her own needs and establishes collaborations with fellow artists and patients, in an all encompassing attempt to capture the elusive state of health and wellness, of taking charge of her own body. In her work process she submerges in the ideas she researches, and they enter every possible aspect of her personal life, while the camera acts as a witness to this process.
From actions and performances, Cohen accumulates moments and materials which are used in the creation of the exhibition space. There, they take their final form: videos of long-duration performances, Xerox prints, manipulated photographs. While some are chosen out of a video-drawing documenting a more prolonged action, others are manipulated still photos that are taken after a long, meticulous preparation for the event of their taking.
A graduate of the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design MFA program (2017) and the Musrara Multidisciplinary School of Art’s photography department (2013),In 2018 Cohen was awarded the Fresh Paint Art Fair Curator prize and the Jerard Levy Award for encouraging creativity in photography by Israel Museum (2019). She has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions as well as solo exhibitions, amongst these: The Simple Body (2022), Westwerk Gallery, Hamburg, How to Die Beautiful (2021) at the CCA, Tel Aviv, Heal (2019) at the Cité Internationale of Arts; Tzamah (2018) at the Kav 16 Gallery, Tel Aviv. Her works can be found in the Israel Museum collection,The Tel Aviv Museum Collection, The Haaretz collection, the Center Pompidou collection, as well as private collections around the world
